In Memoriam: Michael Malec
Retired Professor of Sociology Michael Malec, who taught at ºÚÁϹÙÍø College for 50 years, died on March 31 in Newton, Mass. He was 85.

​A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday​, April 7, at 10:30 a.m. ​atÌýSacred Heart ​ChurchÌýin Newton, with interment to follow at Newton Cemetery. Visiting hours are scheduled for Monday, April 6, from 4-7 p.m. at in Newton.
A native of Chicago, Dr. Malec received a bachelor of science degree from Loyola University in 1962 and a doctorate from Purdue University in 1968. He joined the faculty of ºÚÁϹÙÍø College in 1969 and retired after the 2017-2018 academic year.
During his time at BC, he taught courses including Statistics, Data Analysis, and Sociology of Sport. He spent time as chair of the Sociology Department, advised countless undergraduate and graduate students, and led many service trips to Nicaragua, for which he was recognized with the 2016 ºÚÁϹÙÍø College Community Service Award.
He enjoyed travel and spending time with his family, combining the two whenever possible. He was a devoted Chicago Cubs fan, a BC basketball season ticket owner, and a longtime pickup basketball player at the Flynn Recreation Complex.Ìý
"He will always be loved, remembered, and cherished," said his son Thomas Malec, a director for computing support in Information Technology Services at BC.
Dr. Malec is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Myrna (King) Malec; his sons and their wives, Timothy and Sandy of Newton and Thomas and Barbara of Milton; his grandchildren Matthew, Maria, Will, and James; and his siblings Jim Malec, Judy Kelch, and John Malec.
